Karlovac District Heating company and EKONERG Launch the Transformation of Heating in Karlovac: Contract Signed for the Design Engineering of a Renewable Energy Heat Supply Plant

Karlovac District Heating company continues to invest strongly in a sustainable and modern energy future for the City of Karlovac.

On 16 February 2026, a contract was signed with EKONERG d.o.o., Zagreb – a leading Croatian company in energy projects and renewable energy – for the preparation of the design and technical documentation for a new biomass (pellet-fired) plant and heat accumulator.

This strategic project represents a key step in implementing the strategic plan of Karlovac District Heating company, approved by the Ministry of Economy and the Croatian Energy Regulatory Agency. The plan sets clear objectives: increasing the share of renewable energy sources, decarbonising the heating system and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The 9 MW plant and a 150 MWh heat accumulator will enable maximum energy efficiency and ensure that more than 60% of Karlovac’s heat energy comes from renewable sources. The project is expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by more than 9,000 tonnes annually.

The selection of EKONERG, following a public procurement procedure, confirms the expertise and extensive experience of this renowned company in delivering energy transition projects and innovative energy solutions.

With this project, Karlovac is entering a new era of sustainable heating – the city’s district heating system will be modernised, environmentally friendly and fully aligned with European energy transition objectives.
